On April 27, 1813, American forces, under General Henry Dearborn, captured the British base at York, Canada. This is made possible by close cooperation between the Navy and the Army. On the morning of April 27 1812 American troops went ashore three miles from the Canadian city of York. The attackers outnumbered the defender two to one. Initially the British and their Indian allies put up a spirited defense, but the American soon overcame the opposition. The British regulars withdrew and the Americans soon made there way to York. Before they could take possession of the city a terrible explosion took place, which killed, the American ground commander brigadier general Zevolum Pike (the famous explorer) The British has set fire to ammunition dump in York. American troops quickly occupied the city. Despite explicit orders not to American troops soon engaged in looting, and before long burned down the government and other buildings in town. Within a week they withdrew. The raid on York was touted as the first US victory in the ground war against Canada. |
