Panic of 1837
| The immediate cause of the "Panic of 1837" was President Jackson's decision to allow the sale of land to those paying in gold or silver only. This burst the bubble of land speculation based on borrowed money. The underlying reason for the Panic was the tremendous increase in the number of banks and the amount of paper money in circulation that followed the closing of the Bank of the United States. |
