Astronomer Carl Sagan was responsible for making the science of the heavens accessible to millions. His television appearances and popular books contributed to America's ongoing fascination with space.
Sagan received his doctorate in 1960 from the University of Chicago and by 1968 was director of planetary studies at Cornell University.
