In 1917, General Allenby was made commander of the British Expeditionary Forces in Egypt,. He commanded British troops that advanced across the Sinai desert and captured the Negev. From the Negev, Allenby headed north, entering Jerusalem in October, 1918. Under instructions from the British Foreign Office, Allenby entered Jerusalem on foot as a mark of respect for the sacredness of the city. To the Jews of Jerusalem, Allenby;s victory was a first step in the re-establishment of their homeland. |
