| Charleston, South Carolina, was a city which retained much of its colonial flavor even after the new nation was established. The wharves were busy; as rice and cotton were traded for items from Northern states and Europe. In 1802, the Santee Canal was built, connecting Charleston to the Santee River. This made travel from the outlying rural areas and the city much easier. In addition, a ship regularly carried visitors between Charleston and New York. |
