1947 Bell X-1 breaks the Sound Barrier
American test pilot Captain Charles Yaeger broke the sound barrier on October 14th 1947. Yaeger flew a Bell X-1 test plane that was dropped from a specially modified B-29. Yaeger reached a speed of 670 miles per hour at an altitude of 42,000 feet. |
