On June 15th, 47 B-29 bombers based in China bombed the Imperial Iron and Stell Works at Yawata, Japan. The Army airforce lost one plane in the raid.
Soon B-29's were based in the Marinas Island. The flight was 3,000 miles and there was no place to land if a plane was in trouble. The planes were very effective in attacking Japan, suffering relatively few caulties. Towards the end of the war B-29 began to be used in fire bomb raids that destroyed the centers of all the Japanese cities. By the end of the war the Americas total air and sea superiority allowed US carrier based aircraft to attack to bomb Japan at will.
