1916 Battle of Cambrai -The Battle of Cambrai was the first large-scale tank attack of the war. British forces succeeded in breaking through German lines. The UK troops were unable to take advantage of their breakthrough, however, and the Germans counter-attacked.
1916 Battle of Verdun--The battle began in February, when the Germans had amassed 1,400 guns. The Germans made a determined attempt to break through and made some headway. However, the Germans were finally stopped, in a grinding battle that lasted until June. The French lost an estimated 350,000 troops in the battle.
1915 Battle of Jutland Island -This battle, in the North Sea, was the only naval battle of the war in which the main German and British fleets engaged each other. Previously and subsequently, the naval war was a series skirmishes with German raiders and submarines. The British were successful in blockading the Germans, while the Germans were successful in blocking aid to the Russians and sinking a large number of British merchant vessels with submarines. The battle itself was a tactical victory for the Germans, who sunk twice as much tonnage as the British. The results did not change the strategic situation, however, and the Germans resorted to unrestricted submarine warfare that ultimately resulted in the US intervention.
1915 Battle of Somme-The British launched a major attack against the Germans, using gas for the first time. In the first day of the battle, the British lost 50,000 soldiers. The battle lasted from July 1st until November 8th, and the allies succeeded in recapturing a total of 125 sq. miles of land. No important strategic objectives were captured. The British lost 400,000 troops, the French lost 200,000 and the Germans lost 400-500,000.
1916 Pershing Lead Expedition Against Mexican Rebels -(3/31/16) After attacks against American border settlements, a force of 15,000 US army soldiers, under the command of General Pershing, led a raid into Mexico against Villa. The raid created animosity within Mexico against the United States.
1916 US Troops Intervene in Dominican Republic -After continued armed revolts, US officials declared martial law in the Dominican Republic. Marines had taken over the entire country by November.
1916 Child Labor Law Passed -The Child Labor Law, otherwise known as the "Keating–Owen Act of 1916," prohibited the shipment by interstate commerce of products made by children. This was the first child labor law. The law was invalidated by the Supreme Court two years later.
1916 Easter Uprising in Ireland-(4/24/16)An uprising by Irish Nationals in Dublin began when Irish Nationalists seized post offices and other installations. The Nationalists received logistic support from the Germans, who refused to invade. Padhraic Pearse, the nationalist leader, was captured. This brought an end to the uprising. Pearse was executed by a firing squad

1917

1917 Allenby Takes Jerusalem -British General Allenby attacked the Ottomans in Palestine. The high point in the British assault was the capture of Jerusalem in December 1917.
1917 Russian Revolution (pt. I) - The February Revolution (which actually took place in March) began as a series of riots protesting food shortages and the ongoing unpopular war. Czar Nicholas II ordered the Dumas, the Russian Parliament, disbanded. Members of the Dumas refused to obey the dissolution order.

When Nicholas called on the army to put down the rioters, the army mutinied. Nicholas II was forced to abdicate. A provisional government was formed, the most influential member being Alexander Fyodorovich Kerensky.
1917 Lenin Returns To Russia -( 4/16/17) On April 16th, Vladimir Lenin returned to Russia. The Germans had sent him in a sealed car from Switzerland. They hoped that Lenin would foment further instability in Russia, since Lenin's Bolsheviks were opposed to continuing the war with the Germans.
1917 Bolshevik Revolution -(11/6/17) On November 6th, the Bolsheviks, led by the Military Revolutionary Committee, captured most of the government offices and stormed the Winter Palace, arresting members of the interim government. The Soviets were now in control.
1917 Britain Captures Palestine -As part of its campaign against the Ottomans, the British captured Palestine. Prior to their taking control of Palestine, Great Britain issued the Balfour Declaration. The Balfour Declaration stated that the British government favored "the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people and will use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of that object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious right of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine."
1917 US Enter W.W.I -(4/6/17)On April 6th, the US declared war on Germany. The vote was 90 to 6 in the Senate, and 373 to 50 in the House. The increase in U-Boat activity by Germany, combined with the interception of the Zimmerman telegram (which promised Mexico it would regain part of the United States if it entered the war on the German side), precipitated the final American decision to go to war.
