1876 Republican Convention

Nominated: Rutherford Hayes of Ohio for President
Nominated: William A Wheeler of New York for Vice President
In the period leading to the Republican Convention the leading Republican candidate was James G Blaine the former Speaker of the House. Days before the election Blaine was accused of being tied to the financial scandals that members of the Grant administration. This combined with questions of Blaines health after he collapsed established significant opposition to him. His opponents blocked his nomination on the first ballot and by the sixth ballot had nominated Rutherford Hayes.
