Ponce De Leon Claims Florida
for Spain 1512

Juan Ponce de Leon was the governor of Puerto Rico. He had heard the rumors of a fountain of youth. He was determined to find that fountain. Ponce de Leon set sail in March 1512, with three ships. On Easter Sunday, March 27, 1512 he landed in Florida near St. Augustine. Ponce de Leon explored the Florida Coast. However, he did not find a fountain of youth. Eight years later he returned to Florida to found a new settlement. The settlers were met by Indian attacks. One of the poison arrows of the attackers hit Ponce de Leon. He died from the wound.
