Hungarians (Magyars) speak Hungarian, a Finno-Ugric language unrelated to the Slavic, Germanic, and Romance tongues of their neighbors, giving the nation a strongly distinct identity. Large Hungarian minorities also live in surrounding countries.
The population is historically split between Roman Catholic and Protestant (Calvinist) traditions, though society has grown largely secular.
Hungary has high literacy and education levels but a long-declining population, which the government has tried to reverse through pro-natal family policies rather than immigration.
