Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy the most massive Atlantic hurricane in absolute size in history, came ashore in Southern New Jersey. The storm that combined with a winter storm created the largest storm surge in recent history along the New Jersey coast and the coast of New York which included Long Island. The most severe surge was in New York harbor. The surge in New York harbor was over 11 ft. high and flooded large parts of Lower Manhattan. As a result subway service and electricity was cut off for the southern half of Manhattan. The tunnels under the East River were also flooded. Damage was not limited to Manhattan with the coastal areas of Long Island and New Jersey severely damaged. The total estimated loss from the storm was over $50 Billion. One hundred ninety-two people were killed by the storm including those killed in the Caribbean before the storm hit the United States.
